"Canning" (#2) tomatoes are a by-product of my tomato production for grocery stores. They are in some way not suitable for grocery store sale. They may be misshapen, cracked, or have some other damage. Though we throw out any tomatoes with visible sign of rot, the damaged tomatoes are more prone to rot than #1s. Of course, the canning tomatoes come from the same plants as the #1s and have the same great homegrown flavor. AND they are very attractively priced! We pack canning tomatoes in banana boxes, which are one bushel in volume, and weigh approximately 50 lb. Currently they are priced at $15 per bushel. Our tomato season usually runs from early June through July and perhaps into August. 6/11/2006 We are generating relatively few #2 tomatoes; I sold the first three bushels of the season yesterday. I expect to have tomatoes for only a week or two and then be without for another week or two. Email me to check availability. mckemie at spamcop dot net. 7/28/2005 Recent wet weather brought our tomato season to an abrupt halt. I am scheduled to put in Fall tomatoes in about two weeks. They MIGHT produce starting about mid October. 7/13/2005 We have been selling cannning tomatoes now for several weeks. In fact, we are over the hump. I expect to continue to offer them through the end of the month. Someone is working in the packing shed most mornings, but an appointment is highly recommended. 10/8/2004 We are on the verge of beginning our Fall tomato crop. We expect to have canning tomatoes from mid or late Ocotober through the first freeze in mid November or later. 6/28/2004 Rains have mostly ruined the tomatoes. Plenty of #2s right now, but I expect an end to those fairly soon. I expect to make another planting soon; if I get that done, we may have some more production starting around the end of August. 6/20/2004 Tomatoes remain in good supply. Yesterday was our last day for "regular" hours. From now on, appointments only please. 6/9/2004 Tomatoes are coming in and we have sold the first of the #2, or "canning", tomatoes. The price remains $12 per bushel. #1s are $18 per half bushel. We are currently open from 9am until 11am everyday primarily to sell blackberries. When the blackberry season is over, we will be open by appointment. 7/13/2003 Supply of canning tomatoes is good. I expect to have at least several boxes on hand at all times for the next several weeks. 6/16/2003 We now have a limited supply of canning tomatoes on the farm. Supply will be good within a week. The price this season will be $6 per half bushel. Discounts for larger quantities when supply allows. Farm sales by appointment only! 3/24/03 We expect to begin to have canning tomatoes this season around the first of June. Please contact me prior to coming.
